Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is one of the most sought-after plastic surgery procedures. A breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure that involves adding volume and increasing the size of breasts to create a fuller or more proportionate appearance. For some people, breast augmentation can boost self-esteem, and restore volume lost through childbearing, weight loss or aging. Some women never develop the breasts that they feel would make them more feminine or comfortable in their own skin. Many wish to safely and permanently improve the appearance, shape and size of their breasts, especially after body changes that commonly occur following pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Saline vs. Silicone Implants

There are two breast implant options available: saline and cohesive silicone-gel. Saline implants are filled with sterile saline liquid and can be inserted into the breast pocket via a very small incision, then filled once inside. They tend to be less expensive but also feel less natural than silicone-gel implants. This type of implant is usually not recommended for thin individuals because of its potential rippling effect through thin skin. Silicone-gel implants come pre-filled with silicone-gel to provide a natural look and feel. They are available at a slightly higher price point and are ideal to ensure natural movement and minimize rippling. However, silicone-gel implants do require a slightly larger incision for insertion. Modern silicone implants are made of a cohesive gel which prevents leakage in the event of a rupture. These cohesive gel implants are often referred to as “gummy bear” implants, due to their strong cohesivity. The natural feel and cohesivity often make the modern silicone implants the most popular choice for our breast augmentation patients. The final choice between implant types for your breast augmentation will be determined by your personal preferences and a thorough discussion with Dr. Romy.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

Breast augmentation is a relatively simple, outpatient procedure performed in our state-of-the-art surgical facility. The procedure is completed under general anesthesia. Dr. Romy creates a small skin incision either beneath the breast, around the areola, or in the underarm for inconspicuous and minimal scarring. Next, a pocket for the breast implant is created and the breast implant is gently inserted underneath the muscles of the chest or the breast tissue using a “no touch technique”. Finally, absorbable sutures are used to close the small incisions and a dressing is applied over the wound for effective healing. Most breast augmentation patients feel well after surgery and spend approximately one hour in the recovery area before heading home.
