Breast Reduction

Some women feel uncomfortable with a naturally large breast size, either due to aesthetic preference or due to back and other musculoskeletal pain. Some women report emotional and social anxiety due to their larger body contour, and others find it limits certain activities.

Breast reduction surgery is available to patients who are seeking a solution to reduce and reshape their breasts.

Benefits of a Breast Reduction

This common surgical procedure performed by Dr. Romy reduces the overall size and improves the proportion of the breasts to help patients lead a healthier, more comfortable lifestyle.

Patients report decreased shoulder and back pain along with improved self-esteem. Additionally, patients can enjoy more wardrobe possibilities and increased ease of movement during physical activities.

Breast reduction can help make the body appear more proportionate, improve the fit of clothing and make regular exercise easier.

Breast Reduction Candidates

Breast reduction surgery offers the most benefits to women who have:

  • large breasts
  • disproportionate body frame
  • nipples that are pointed downward
  • sagging breasts due to loss of skin elasticity from oversized breasts
  • neck, shoulder or back pain caused by the weight of large breasts
  • skin irritation beneath the breasts

Macromastia

Macromastia, otherwise known as female breast hypertrophy, is a medical condition that leads to abnormal breast enlargement characterized by excessive tissue growth. The severity of macromastia is characterized by the amount of breast tissue present. The condition is considered mild if tissue growth is less than 300 grams; moderate if it is between 300-800 grams, and severe if it exceeds 800 grams above the typical size. Macromastia can affect one or both breasts and is often accompanied by sagging of the breast tissue. The development of macromastia may have several causes, but is usually the result of overactive glands or fatty tissue from pubertal development, post-natal growth, menopause or weight gain.

Breast Reduction Procedure

Surgical breast reduction requires the use of a general anesthetic throughout the procedure. Dr. Romy creates an incision around the areola and then downward and along the breast crease. Excess breast tissue and skin are removed using liposuction and excision. Finally, the breasts are reshaped and repositioned for a more youthful and elevated appearance. The surgery will take two to three hours to perform.
